Collection: Box Elder

Box Elder (Acer negundo) – Wood Properties for Craft & Décor

  • Durability – Low natural decay resistance; best suited for indoor projects.
  • Hardness – Relatively soft, with a Janka hardness around 720 lbf (~3,200 N).
  • Grain & Color – Generally light cream or pale yellow; may feature striking pink or red streaks (often called “flame” box elder). Grain is typically straight, sometimes with slight figure.
  • Workability – Easy to cut, shape, and sand; takes finishes well. Its softness can lead to denting if not handled with care.
  • Uses – Popular for woodturning, carving, decorative bowls, and small crafts. The colorful streaks are especially prized in high-end turning blanks and accent pieces.
  • Stability – Tends to shrink or warp if not properly dried; proper seasoning and sealing help maintain dimensional stability.
